Book Ends October Book Notes 2003:

What a wonderful time we had at Kate Genovese’s book signing and talk Thursday September 25th

Other fall author events at Book Ends include –

Thursday 7:30 October 2nd – William Landay Mission Flats

In the best-selling tradition of Scott Turow and Dennis Lehane, a former district attorney explodes onto the scene with a blistering debut set in Maine and Boston. Ben Truman, chief of police in Versailles, Maine, keeps his most precious childhood memory--an old home movie of his mother--locked in a drawer. It captures a time of innocence, a time when nothing could destroy a boy's happiness. Years later, something did. And Ben will do anything to prevent that day from resurfacing--at all costs. When a DA is found brutally murdered in Versailles, Ben is forced to head down to Boston to follow the few fragile leads he has in the case. It is a search that will lead him to the highest echelons of the Boston PD, where the ghosts of past crimes haunt the present, and buried secrets lie waiting to be unearthed. But at what price? Some memories are best laid to rest. Others haunt. And some prove so relentless, they'll devour you whole.... A complex and harrowing tale of suspense and the burdens of the past, Mission Flats heralds the arrival of a brilliant and electrifying new author. Foreign rights to Mission Flats have been sold in eight countries. Autographed copies will be available

October Notes – Children’s Room

We’re ready for Halloween in the children’s room! For younger readers, there’s an old favorite, The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams, as well as a newly released book by Margaret Wise Brown called The Fierce Yellow Pumpkin . Marc Brown’s lift the flap and sticker book – Arthur’s Spookiest Halloween is sure to please as well! Mary Pope Osborne has a new Magic Tree House book, just in time for Halloween, Haunted Castle on Hallow’s Eve . This is #30 in the wonderful series. For 4-6 grade readers, there’s a fun new choose-your-own-adventure type series called Scream Shop, by Tracey West. The first three titles are now available: Abracadanger , Now You See Me, Now You Don’t , and Eye Spy Aliens .

Another really great discovery is Eragon: Inheritance, the first in a planned fantasy trilogy by Christopher Paolini. Book Ends September Book Notes 2003:

Please don't miss story time every Wednesday 11-11:30

September means back to school for many of our younger readers. Is there a reluctant scholar in your house? The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn tells with handsome illustrations how a mother raccoon eases her child's loneliness away from home with a kiss on his hand. Helpful and funny, Marc Brown's D.W.'s Guide to Preschool uses lively pictures to follow Arthur's sassy little sister on her first day in preschool. More serious issues relevant to students in grades 5 through 8 are tackled in Arlene Erlbach's The Middle School Survival Guide . Intelligent advice is offered on a range of topics. Also new this fall are Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See? , a picture book with story by Bill Martin, Jr. and Eric Carle's Colorful illustrations; the sixth epic novel about the ever popular Captain Underpants by Dav Pilky; Captain Underpants and the Big, Bad Battle of the Bionic Booger Boy ; and #30 of the Magic Tree House books, Haunted Castle on Hollow's Eve by Mary Pope Osborne.

September also heralds the publication of three highly original first novels. The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri expands upon the themes of culture clash and the immigrant experience that enriched her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection of stories, Interpreter of Maladies .

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. weaves a coming-of-age story with an excursion into the mind of a brilliant fifteen-year-old autistic boy.

Yet to reach our shelves but already garnering strong reviews, The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger tells a fantasy-filled love story, with a hero who never knows when he will be whisked away in time.

Readers who cherished Tuesdays with Morrie will welcome the new book by Mitch Albom, The Five People You Meet in Heaven (to be published September 23). Simply told, this fable continues the story of Eddie, who wakes up in heaven where five people show him the true value and meaning of his life.

Two book signing events are scheduled for early fall. On Thursday, September 25, we will welcome Woburn's Kate Genovese, author of Loving Joe Gallucci , based on the true story of a family's struggle when the husband is diagnosed with hepatitis C.

On Thursday, October 2, former assistant D.A. William Landay will read from his thriller Mission Flats which explores the gritty underworld of Boston cops and criminals.

As always, if we do not have a book on hand, we are pleased to order it for you. And, quite often, orders arrive within a day or two.
